Girl Interrupted Research Paper - 1780 Words

The movie â€Å"Girl, Interrupted† is about a young woman named Susanne, who struggles with life and depression. When she attempts suicide, she is sent to a mental institution, where the psychiatrist diagnosed her with borderline personality disorder (Mangold, 1999). This disorder’s symptoms include instability in relationships, identity disturbance, impulsivity, emotional instability, and chronic feelings of emptiness (National Institute of Mental Health, 2013). What is personality? What causes a person to have a personality disorder? Why do people behave and think differently and what influences these behaviors? There have been many theorists who have tried to find the answers to these questions. Research has produced many theories of†¦show more content†¦Attention is the set of processes through which a person focuses on incoming information. These people define problem solving as â€Å"operating within constraints and reaching a goal from a starting state that is nowhere near the goal (Riegler, Riegler, 2009). Decision making is an interaction of these processes to make a decision. Each of these mental processes can be difficult to understand, but the human brain does most of the work without any one individual having to put too much effort into making it happen. Everyone’s mental process is different and unique from the next person, which is correlated to each individual’s personality and how these traits influences these different behaviors. Take, for example, Susanne in â€Å"Girl, Interrupted†. Susanne talked often about having detailed thought about suicide, and the requirements of a successful suicide, and then attempted suicide followed by denial. Aspects of personality can change throughout life, and are influenced by both internal factors (genetics) and external factors (environment). Other aspects, such as temperament, or stable individual differences in emotional reactivity, remain the same.
